Climate Change Education Based on the IMB Model for Pregnant Women

Sponsor: Cukurova University

View on ClinicalTrials.gov

Summary

Climate change can affect the health of pregnant women and their babies, for example through extreme heat and air pollution. Many pregnant women worry about these effects but do not know how to protect themselves. This study tested whether a short education program could help pregnant women understand these risks and learn practical ways to protect their health. Pregnant women attending an antenatal education class took part in one group education session lasting about one hour. The session covered how climate change affects pregnancy and newborn health, helped women think about their own risks, and taught simple protective steps, such as staying safe on very hot days and on days with poor air quality. Women completed questionnaires before the session and again four weeks later. The study looked at changes in their awareness of climate change, their worry about climate change, how risky they felt their pregnancy was, and their fear of childbirth.

IMB-Based Climate Change Education

A nurse-led group education session for 4-6 pregnant women, based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model. The information component covered climate change and its effects on pregnancy and fetal health; the motivation component included a personal risk assessment focused on protecting maternal and infant health; and the behavioral skills component covered practical steps for coping with extreme heat, poor air quality, nutrition, and water consumption. Participants received the booklet "Climate Change Adaptation Guide for Pregnant Women" at the end of the session. No additional training or reminders were given during the four-week follow-up.
