The Effect of Injectable Platelet Rich Fibrin on Apical Lesion Healing

Sponsor: Hande Has Elçi

View on ClinicalTrials.gov

Summary

In recent years, the use of autologously obtained blood products that stimulate cell proliferation, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), has become increasingly widespread. Numerous studies have been published on PRF, which comes in many different forms. I-PRF, an injectable form, requires a lower cycle time and has a higher growth factor. Conventional root canal treatment remains effective in the treatment of periapical lesions. However, the treatment course can vary, and lesion size may remain constant even after the termination of root canal treatment, even if symptoms resolve. Therefore, our study aimed to achieve greater bone trabeculation and a greater reduction in lesion size compared to conventional treatment in the treatment of relatively large lesions (0.3-1 cm) by injecting I-PRF into the apical lesion area at several points and in three sessions. To this end, to more clearly demonstrate healing and to examine trabeculations in detail, cone-beam computed tomography images will be obtained on the day the apical lesions are diagnosed (day 1) and at the second follow-up appointment (month 6). If our study results are significant, it will be possible to salvage teeth with apical lesions, often considered for extraction, with a cost-effective treatment option.

Interventions

OTHER

i-PRF

Both groups underwent root canal treatment. In the study group, i-PRF injections derived from the patient's own blood were administered to the root apex of the relevant tooth. The differences were that it was performed using microneedling and applied without opening a flap.

OTHER

root canal treatment and intracanal medicament

A two-stage standard root canal treatment was performed.
