Alternatives to Dental Opioid Prescribing After Tooth Extraction

The goal of this clinical trial is to test a three-item intervention in oral surgeons who remove teeth. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Can the intervention reduce opioid prescriptions to adolescents and young adults after tooth removal? * Do oral surgeons' beliefs about the intervention and opioid prescribing change? * Do patients that report using opioids after tooth removal have different experiences than patients that do not? Oral surgeon participants will: * Attend a 1-hour education session with a trained pharmacist * Receive patient instructions and blister packs of pain medicine to give to patients * Complete 2 surveys about feasibility and appropriateness Patient participants will complete a survey about pain and medication use after having a tooth removed. Researchers will compare the intervention to usual care to see if it reduces opioid prescribing.

Intravenous Acetaminophen to Reduce Post-operative Opioid Consumption

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a commonly used medication after surgery to control pain. Tablets for oral use and suppositories for rectal use are the most frequently employed forms of acetaminophen after surgery. Intravenous (IV) acetaminophen is widely used in several countries but is not a standard medication for the adult population in Canada. It is mainly considered when it is impossible to take medication in tablet or suppository form. Opioids (Morphine, Hydromorphone, Oxycodone, etc.) are another class of medications commonly used after surgery for pain management. While they are generally very effective and stronger than acetaminophen or other pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen/Advil), reducing their use is preferable, as they can cause various side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and dependence. IV acetaminophen may help control pain while also reducing opioid consumption. However, there are few high-quality scientific studies proving the benefits of IV acetaminophen compared to other forms, such as tablets or suppositories. Acetaminophen has been available in Canada for many years and has already been recommended for use in Quebec by the Institut national d'excellence en santé et services sociaux (INESSS) under certain conditions. This study aims to validate its benefits with clear data.

Screening of Susceptibility Genes for APAP Induced Drug Induced LIver Injury in ChiNese Population: a Case-control Study

Acetaminophen (APAP) is the most commonly used NSAIDS in clinic, and it is also a common cause of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). In 2012, the proportion of DILI caused by APAP in the United States was 51%, while in Asia, it was only 7.10%. Previously, a small cohort study in the United States screened for some of the susceptibility genes for DILI due to APAP by the Genome wide association study (GWAS) method. However, the genetic susceptibility loci based on the US cohort were not applicable to the Chinese population. Therefore, we make a study design include Chinese population who ingested APAP and divided them into case group and control group according to the occurrence of DILI. We hope to be able to find the root of differences at the genetic level and explore new pathogenic mechanisms.
