Using Middle School Science Teachers to Address Cancer Health Disparities

The CARES4You study is testing a middle school science curriculum designed to teach students about cancer risk and prevention. The lessons are taught by regular science teachers during class time and are aligned with national science education standards. The curriculum includes six units (14 lessons) that help students learn about cancer, understand how lifestyle and environmental factors influence risk, and think about ways to make healthy choices. The study will take place in 10 public middle schools in New York City. Some schools will begin using the CARES4You curriculum right away, while others will continue with their usual science lessons and receive the program later. Researchers will compare the two groups of schools. The main goal of the study is to see whether the curriculum increases students' intentions to engage in healthy behaviors that may reduce cancer risk. The study will also examine whether students talk more with their caregivers about cancer risk and prevention after participating in the program. Caregivers may also report on some health behaviors in the household. If the program is effective, CARES4You could provide schools with a practical and sustainable way to teach cancer prevention and promote healthy behaviors among adolescents and their families.

Behavior and Risk Awareness Through Video Education for Firefighters

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the impact of short documentary-style videos to educate and inspire firefighters to take safety measures to prevent cancer incidence and mortality. The main question it aims to answer is: Will firefighters will have a higher perceived susceptibility to cancer, lower perceived barriers to cancer risk reduction practices, and higher perceived self-efficacy and benefit to risk reduction practices after watching the videos? Participants will: * Take a Pre-Intervention survey * Watch one of five randomly assigned 5 minute video interventions * Take a Post-Intervention survey

Eatwell Clinical Trial (R01)

Cancer is a leading cause of death and will affect many people in their lifetimes. Organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) have noted that dietary quality is a key factor influencing cancer risk, but most Americans do not meet these dietary guidelines for cancer prevention. The proposed study will enroll adults from the community (n=236 index participants, 236 household members; N = 472) who have low adherence to WCRF/AICR's four dietary guidelines. Participants will be randomized to either nutrition education or the Eatwell intervention. The Eatwell intervention content is focused on helping participants make healthier grocery shopping decisions, eat at home more often to take advantage of the optimal defaults present there, and learn how to navigate temptation when eating away from home. The findings will be relevant not only to the field of cancer prevention, but to the prevention of other diseases for which dietary quality is important.

Initial Testing of a Behavioral Intervention About Genetic Services for Families at Risk of Lynch Syndrome

The purpose of the study is to see if our education materials help people at risk for Lynch syndrome decide about seeking genetic services. Untested relatives of patients with Lynch syndrome will be recruited to complete a baseline survey and will be randomized to receive either the an information letter or an information letter plus a booklet. Two follow-up surveys will be administered over the span of 6 months. Participants will also be invited to join an optional exit interview to provide feedback.

Quitting Matters Human Immunodeficiency Virus Hybrid Trial

The purpose of this study is to compare the advantages and disadvantages of two approaches for quitting smoking among people living with HIV (PWH). Participants will complete a 24- week (\~6-month) study where the Participants will be assigned to one of two smartphone apps to help with quitting smoking. Regardless of the group participants are assigned to, they will also receive a combination of nicotine replacement therapy (patches and gums) that have been shown to help people quit smoking. The main questions this study aims to answer are: Participants will complete 5 video call visits over about 6 months. Participants will install their assigned smoking cessation app onto their phone and will be asked to use the app for the duration of the study along with their provided Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products. During the study visits, participants will meet with study staff to complete questionnaires and interviews. Participants may be asked to provide breath and saliva samples to measure the level of carbon monoxide and nicotine.

Empowering Vietnamese Americans

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether short videos can help Vietnamese American mothers decide to vaccinate their children against HPV (human papillomavirus). The study will explore: (1) which type of video is most effective in encouraging mothers to vaccinate their children; (2) how mothers perceive and engage with the videos; and (3) how many children receive the HPV vaccine after their mothers watch the videos. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: (a) watch four short digital stories about the HPV vaccine created by Vietnamese mothers; (b) watch four short informational videos about HPV and the vaccine; or (c) watch four short videos on general teen health topics such as mental health and social media use. Participants will complete brief surveys and their child's HPV vaccination status will be checked two months after the intervention.

The Food Environment, Microbial Cysteine Metabolism, and Cancer Disparities

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if changing cysteine levels in the diet can influence how the body processes cysteine in Black and White individuals aged 45-75 with a history of non-cancerous polyps. The main questions it aims to answer are: * At the beginning of the study, do Black participants have higher levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) and compounds made from cysteine in their blood when compared to White participants? * Does eating less cysteine lower the body's natural cysteine activity and lead to less gut bacteria that break down cysteine? * Does eating less cysteine lead to less inflammation in the gut and lower levels of markers of inflammation in the blood? Research will compare a high cysteine diet and a low cysteine diet, and each participant will eat both diets. Participants will be in the study for 11 weeks and 2 days. Over the course of the study, participants will: * Eat a high cysteine diet for 3 weeks, and a low cysteine diet for 3 weeks * Eat a moderate cysteine diet for 1 week before each study diet * Complete surveys * Provide blood, stool, and saliva samples * Maintain food logs

Firefighters Preventing Cancer Online Training Program

The goal of this two-arm, Cluster Randomized Trial is to evaluate an e-health training program for volunteer firefighters to reduce their risk of exposures to carcinogens and to increase their understanding and intentions of behavior towards cancer prevention. One arm will receive an online e-health intervention for six months and the other arm will be considered as a waitlist control group which will be placed on a waitlist and receive the online treatment program some months later. The project aims to evaluate the firefighters by measurement of current behavior, perceived importance, future behavioral intentions and perceived barriers for implementing decontamination behaviors at baseline, after the intervention and after 3-month follow-up before and after the intervention. The intervention consists of three components: 1. a novel health information strategy, 90SecondFire Cancer health letters 2. a brief on-line course 3. a problem-solving asynchronous bulletin board to mobilize existing knowledge

Program of Health Behaviour Against to Cancer (PHeBAC)

The European Code Against Cancer contains 12 recommendations to reduce the risk of cancer. It is estimated that about half of all cancers could be prevented if all recommendations are followed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Program of Health Behaviour Against Cancer (PHeBAC) applied to mothers of children with intellectual disabilities in increasing the participation of mothers and their children with intellectual disabilities in cancer screenings and their health behaviors against cancer. The goal is to improve the preventive health behaviors of children with intellectual disabilities and their mothers against cancer and to increase the rate of participation in cancer screenings. Specific targets are; not smoking and not being exposed to smoking, increasing physical activity, healthy nutrition, limiting alcohol consumption, protection from sunlight, HPV vaccination and increasing participation in breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings.
