Theories of Working Memory and Consolidation/RECOnsolidation in the Process of Resorption of Post-traumatic Symptoms.

EMDR is a psychotherapeutic approach recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the treatment of disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and, more generally, psychological distress. In all these disorders, intrusions are one of the symptoms leading to intense emotional distress. EMDR therapy, by making intrusions less emotional and less present in the mind (i.e. less vivid), would reduce psychological distress. This symptomatological reduction would be made possible by the therapist's application of alternating bilateral visual (rapid eye movements following a point from left to right), auditory (tones emitted alternately in the right ear and then in the left ear) and/or tactile (tapping with fingers on the left and right shoulders alternately) stimulations administered while the patient concentrates on his or her intrusive thoughts. Accordingly, the aim of this research is to investigate the efficacy of self-administration of Alternating Bilateral Stimulations (ABS), on the emotional intensity (emotionality) associated with negative intrusive thoughts (or intrusions).

EMDR for Fear of Cancer Recurrence in Patients with Familial Melanoma: a Waiting List Control Trial

High fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) impacts patient's quality of life (QoL) and is prevalent among patients with familial melanoma. The main objective is to investigate whether EMDR is effective in treating high FCR in patients with familial melanoma. The study design is a non-blinded, randomized waiting-list controlled trial. Patients aged 18 years or older with familial melanoma can be included. Patients with high FCR will receive a maximum of 4, 90 minutes, EMDR-sessions. The main study parameter is the decrease and level of FCR measured with the Cancer Worry Scale (CWS). The secondary study parameter is quality of life, measured with the EORTC.

Effectiveness of Trauma Treatment in the Specialist Health Care Services

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental illness. Treatments for PTSD are regarded as highly effective, but a large-scale, prospective, longitudinal randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of these treatments has been requested by the research community. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the effectiveness of two prominent PTSD therapies, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD), within the Norwegian specialist health care services. The study aims to compare the therapy effectiveness, including their impact on comorbid disorders, complex PTSD symptoms, and functional outcomes post-treatment. Patients will be randomly assigned to EMDR or CT-PTSD and given manualized therapy aligned with their treatment goals. Each arm aims to recruit 135 patients, resulting in a total sample size of 270 patients. The main objective of this study is to examine the growth curves of the two methods and how patient characteristics affect their developments. Secondary short-term aims include (1) investigating the impact of EMDR and CT-PTSD on complex PTSD symptoms, (2) assessing effects on other clinical conditions and functional outcomes, and (3) exploring whether the therapeutic alliance mediates treatment effects. Secondary long-term aims are (1) to assess the long-term effects of EMDR and CT-PTSD on PTSD symptoms and (2) to explore the impact of extended or additional treatments on outcomes.

EMDR Treatment in PTSD Following Cardiac Events

Cardiac events can often result in debilitating and persistent psychological symptoms. A key question involves whether optimal treatment of cardiac-induced posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reduces PTSD symptoms and thereby may offset the risk of recurrent or worsening cardiovascular disease. Cardiac-induced PTSD 1) is prevalent, 2) features symptoms unique to internal ongoing somatic threat, with fears and worries that can be distinguished from PTSD resulting from external causes, 3) is persistent, 4) is associated with negative physical and emotional consequences, and 5) has not been the subject of randomized-controlled treatment trials (RCT). There is preliminary evidence suggesting that patients with cardiac-disease induced PTSD might particularly profit from EMDR. Nevertheless, this possibility has not been tested in cardiac-induced PTSD. Currently, patients with cardiac-induced PTSD are not routinely offered trauma-focused therapies, with a lack of scientific evidence likely being one major reason for this omission. If our proposed RCT shows that EMDR can be an effective treatment for patients with ACS-induced PTSD, EMDR could be routinely implemented as first-line treatment. The RCT outcomes might inform larger trials to test whether poor prognosis in terms of major adverse cardiovascular events can be improved through EMDR in patients with cardiac-induced PTSD.
