A Comparative Study of Intradialytic vs. Pre-Dialysis Physical Therapy Interventions in Individuals Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

This randomized controlled trial aims to compare the effectiveness of two different timings of physical therapy for individuals undergoing hemodialysis: intradialytic (during dialysis) and pre-dialysis (before dialysis). The study seeks to determine which approach provides better improvements in physical function, quality of life, and biochemical outcomes such as hemoglobin and electrolyte levels. A total of 72 adult participants with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving hemodialysis will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Both groups will receive standardized educational sessions on the benefits and safety of exercise before beginning the intervention. Participants in the intradialytic group will perform supervised exercises during their dialysis sessions, while those in the pre-dialysis group will complete similar exercises before their dialysis sessions. Each participant will undergo the intervention twice per week for 12 weeks. Primary outcomes include physical function, assessed using the Six-Minute Walk Test and the Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test. Secondary outcomes include hemoglobin levels, electrolyte balance, and health-related quality of life measured by the KDQOL questionnaire. The study will be conducted at Mubarak Al-Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Dialysis Center, Kuwait, following ethical approval from the Ministry of Health Research Ethics Committee. The results are expected to inform best practices for integrating physical therapy into dialysis care to enhance the health, safety, and well-being of individuals undergoing hemodialysis.

Effect of Therapeutic Touch on Perceived Stress and Comfort Levels in Hemodialysis Patients

Hemodialysis is a treatment method used in the treatment of acute or chronic renal failure, the main function of which is based on the cleaning of accumulated waste materials in the blood, and is rapidly developing and spreading in parallel with today's technology. Patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment are trying to cope with social and physical problems that may develop due to chronic disease. At the same time, their quality of life is affected due to the psychosocial, economic problems and complications brought about by machine dependency. From past to present, individuals have used various methods to protect/improve their health. Today, in addition to modern medicine, complementary/alternative therapies are increasingly used. One of these alternative therapies is the therapeutic touch application, which has recently gained popularity. Therapeutic touch is based on the therapeutic effect of the act of touching. Therapeutic touch, alternatively known as healing touch, is a complementary/alternative treatment method applied by touching energy points in the body. Therefore, this study was planned to examine the effect of therapeutic touch applied to hemodialysis patients on perceived stress and comfort levels. This study, planned as a randomized experimental study with a pre-test-post-test intervention control group, will be a study on dialysis patients receiving treatment at the hemodialysis unit of Fırat University Hospital between June 2025-June 2026. The sample will consist of a minimum of 60 dialysis patients (30 intervention, 30 control) who meet the research criteria and accept the study. The patients in the intervention and control groups will first be informed about the application before starting the application and their verbal and written consents will be obtained. Then, the Patient Identification Form, Visual Analog Scale-Comfort (VAS-Comfort), Hemodialysis Comfort Scale (HKS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) will be applied and the 1st measurement will be obtained. The application will last approximately 15-30 minutes for the patients in the intervention group every three days. After three days of alternate application, data forms will be filled in again for patients and 2nd measurements will be obtained. During this period, no intervention will be made to patients in the control group and only the normal treatment protocol will be applied. At the end of three days, data forms will be filled in again and 2nd measurements will be obtained. In the analysis of data; frequency and percentage analyses, chi-square analysis, standard deviation, t-test in dependent groups, t-test analysis in independent groups will be performed.

The Effect of Horticultural Therapy on Stress, Well-Being, and Care Burden in Hemodialysis Caregivers

This research is a randomized controlled single-blind experimental study aiming to evaluate the effect of horticultural therapy on stress, well-being, and caregiver burden among caregivers of hemodialysis patients. The study will be conducted between April-July 2025 with caregivers of patients receiving hemodialysis treatment at Bingöl State Hospital. The sample of the study will consist of 82 caregivers, randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. After obtaining verbal and written consents from all participants, the Introductory Information Form, Perceived Stress Scale, General Well-Being Scale, and Zarit Burden Interview will be applied as pre-test. The experimental group will participate in horticultural therapy activities once a week for 12 weeks, while no intervention will be given to the control group during this period. Following the intervention, post-test measurements will be administered to both groups using the same instruments. In addition, feedback will be collected from caregivers in the experimental group regarding the research process. After the study is completed, the same intervention will also be offered to the control group to ensure ethical responsibility. Data obtained will be analyzed using SPSS 22.00 package program. Ethical principles will be observed throughout the study, ethics committee approval has been obtained, and the Helsinki Declaration of Human Rights will be adhered to. The results are planned to be presented at an international congress and published in an SCI/SSCI-indexed journal, contributing to the scientific literature.
