Patient-Reported Outcomes for Different Orthodontic Thermoplastics Used in Clear Aligners

Clear aligner therapy is an esthetic orthodontic treatment modality that uses removable thermoplastic trays to correct dental alignment. Different thermoplastic materials, including thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), may differ in flexibility and mechanical behavior. These material differences may influence patient-reported outcomes such as pain, mucosal ulceration, tooth sensitivity, tooth mobility, and material-related allergic symptoms. This randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial will compare patient-reported outcomes in patients treated with clear aligners fabricated from TPU versus PETG. Participants requiring non-extraction clear aligner therapy for mild to moderate crowding will be randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive aligners fabricated from either PETG or TPU. Outcomes will be recorded at five predefined time points after aligner assignment and wear: T0 before aligner wear, T1 immediately after aligner insertion/wear, T2 at day 1, T3 at day 3, and T4 at day 7.

Orthognathic Speech Pathology: Phonetic Contrasts of Patients With Dental Discrepancies Pre- and Post-Treatment Analyses

The investigators are studying how speech is effected by jaw and tooth position in jaw surgery patients. Eighty percent of our jaw surgery patients have speech pathologies, compared to five percent of the general population, but speech pathologists do not understand why. The investigators hypothesize that open bites and underbites prevent most patients from being able to pronounce words normally and surgical correction will lead to improvement in speech. Patients will be audio recorded speaking and patients' tongue gestures ultrasound recorded before and after their jaw surgeries to observe what changes occur in their speech and tongue movements.

3D Analysis of Palatal Morphology of Growing Patients Treated With Rapid Palatal Expander.

The aim of the present study is to assess the changes of palatal morphology among growing patients with different vertical facial growth patterns treated with rapid palatal expander. Thirty-six patients referred to "Policlinico Agostino Gemelli" university hospital will be selected. The eligible criteria are posterior cross-bite, mixed dentition, skeletal Class I relationship and prepubertal stage of cervical vertebral maturation. The patients will be split into three groups according to facial divergency (hyper-, hypo-, normodivergent subjects). For each subject, digital dental casts will be recorded before and after treatment using an intraoral scanner. To evaluate two-dimensional maxillary arch changes, linear measurements will be done. To study comprehensively the palatal shape, a set of 240 landmark and semi-landmarks will be digitized on the palatal vault. Then, Geometric Morphometric Analysis (GMA) will be performed to compare morphological variations of the palate among different vertical facial growth pattern groups.
