Creating VIP Corps to Reduce Maternal Deaths

The goal of this observational study is to create and rigorously evaluate a violence intervention and prevention corps (VIP Corps) training using a randomized controlled trial among undergraduate and professional students; and to develop a novel maternal injury surveillance system (MISS) to complement an existing maternal violent death registry in Kentucky.

Enhancing Intergenerational Health in Nigeria: Peripartum as Critical Life Stage for Cardiovascular Health

The purpose of the ENHANCE-CVH study is to promote intergenerational cardiovascular health (CVH) of women and children in Abuja and the surrounding Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. The study team plans to achieve this through an adaptation of an existing evidence based intervention - Parents as Teachers (PAT) curriculum + Healthy Eating Active Living Taught at Home (HEALTH) - among pregnant women with obesity and their children in Nigeria. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of community health educator-led delivery of the PAT+HEALTH intervention via home visits to answer the following main questions: * Will the women participating in the intervention have a greater change in weight from baseline to 18-month follow up compared to the women who do not? * Will the women and children in the intervention group display better CVH promoting lifestyle behaviors compared to those in the control group? Participants in the study will complete baseline surveys and have clinical data, lab data, and body measurements captured. Participants will also have these procedures repeated at birth and every 6 months up to 24 months post-delivery. Once randomized to the intervention group, participants will complete 40 biweekly PAT+HEALTH curriculum delivery sessions, each lasting approximately 60-90 minutes.

The Maternal Health Multilevel Intervention for Racial Equity (MIRACLE) Project

This community-partnered study will scale a community, provider, and system-level implementation intervention to reduce African American maternal morbidity and mortality disparities in two Michigan counties (Genesee and Kent). This project will test the intervention using data from Medicaid insured women who deliver in Michigan from 2016-2019 and 2022-2025 (approximately 540,000 births, including 162,000 births to African American women).

Culturally Engaged REcovery: MOms Connected Through Native CommunitY

Pregnant and postpartum American Indian and Alaska Native people (Native mothers) face a more than two-fold higher risk of maternal mortality compared to non-Hispanic White mothers. Deaths related to substance use (SU) and mental health conditions are a leading cause of preventable maternal mortality, including among Native mothers, making these conditions a strong target for reducing maternal mortality and morbidity. The objective of our study is to 1) adapt evidence-based perinatal care models that integrate pregnancy and postpartum care with SU treatment and care to meet the needs of Native mothers, and 2) assess the implementation and efficacy of that model for participants with substance use disorder who identify as Native receiving prenatal care at Sacred Circle Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah.
