Augmented Feedback Effects on Shoulder Rotator Performance

The existing literature demonstrates that motor learning strategies are effective in enhancing sports performance. One of these strategies, augmented feedback, is widely used in athletic training to help athletes achieve their goals more effectively, support the learning process, and motivate improvements in performance. Although studies in the literature have demonstrated the positive effects of augmented feedback provided during training on performance, no study has been found that examines the acute effects of such feedback on peak force and rate of force development during isometric training of the shoulder internal and external rotator muscles. The aim of this study is to investigate the acute effects of outcome feedback on isometric peak force and rate of force development during isometric training of the shoulder internal and external rotator muscles, as well as the short-term retention of these effects. It is expected that augmented feedback on isometric peak force and rate of force development, provided during isometric training of the shoulder internal and external rotator muscles, will have both acute and short-term retention effects on strength parameters. Healthy and physically active individuals will participate in isometric strength training targeting the dominant side shoulder internal and external rotator muscles across two separate sessions. Within a randomized crossover design, all participants will perform the isometric training program under two different conditions: with augmented feedback and without augmented feedback. The order of the conditions will be determined using a computer-based randomization program. To minimize potential learning effects, a washout period of 5-7 days will be provided between the two training conditions. Testing and training protocols will be conducted using an isometric dynamometer (ForceFrame, VALD Performance, Australia). The reported intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) of the ForceFrame dynamometer for shoulder strength measurements range between 0.85 and 0.91, indicating good to excellent test-retest reliability. All testing and training procedures will be performed in accordance with the standard testing positions recommended by the manufacturer.

Shoulder Instability Surgery: Latarjet Technique With Surgical Tape Versus Screw Fixation

Anterior shoulder instability is a common condition, particularly in young and active patients, and may lead to recurrente shoulder dislocations, pain, and functional limitations. The open Latarjet procedure is a widely used surgical technique to treat this condition, especially in patients with significant glenoid bone loss. In the traditional Latarjet procedure, the transferred coracoid bone graft is fixed to the anterior glenoid using metallic screws. Although screw fixation provides stable compression, implant-related complications have been reported, including hardware irritation, screw loosening, graft fracture and the need for hardware removal. High-strength suture tape cerclage has been proposed as an alternative fixation method that may reduce implant-related complications while maintaining adequate graft stability. This study aims to compare coracoid graft fixation using high-strength suture tape cerclage versus conventional metallic screw fixation in patients undergoing the Latarjet procedure for anterior shoulder instability. Participants will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either screw fixation or suture tape cerclage fixation. Clinical and radiological outcomes will be evaluated during postoperative follow-up, including shoulder function, pain, return to sports activity, complications and graft healing. This study will be conducted at Hospital Universitario La Paz (Madrid, Spain), with a planned sample size of approximately 80 patients and a minimum follow-up of 12 months.

ATI Evidence-based Guide Investigating Clinical Services

The goal of this study is to evaluate how standard-of-care outpatient rehabilitation is delivered and how variation in care delivery mechanisms relates to clinical outcomes, service utilization, and value in patients receiving physical or occupational therapy. The study will focus on patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions receiving physical or occupational therapy. The focus is to use existing standard-of-care documentation in a physical therapy (PT) electronic medical record (EMR) to evaluate patient characteristics, interventions delivered, utilization management, and clinical outcomes in routine outpatient PT care, in order to generate evidence to improve clinical effectiveness and quality of care. Researchers will compare different care delivery mechanisms to see if variations lead to significant differences in outcomes. Participants will have their standard-of-care documentation analyzed, including routine clinical measures, objective/functional measures, and patient-reported outcomes. They will not be directly involved in research interventions or randomization. This study does not involve a research intervention, randomization, or alteration of clinical care. It is a retrospective cohort study analyzing existing standard-of-care documentation from ATI's physical therapy EMR. Data are collected via the investigators proprietary electronic medical record system and are synthetic to the clinical process that is, the data are collected in real-time with patients and the scores are immediately provided to the treating therapist as well as archived for later Registry and scientific use.

Effects of Spencer's Technique on Shoulder Function

The purpose of this study is to see the impact of a modified Spencer's technique on tissue stiffness, mobility, and blood flow of the shoulder joint. Spencer's technique is a well-known osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) that is common for treating adhesive capsulitis and is believed to help blood flow. There are studies that look at the clinical effects of the technique and/or compare it to other techniques; however, measuring the extent to which Spencer's technique, or this modified technique, improves tissue stiffness and blood flow has never been written in the literature. This study will serve as a proof of concept that this technique improves tissue stiffness, blood flow, and mobility of the shoulder join as well as the nearby areas. Using ultrasound, the investigators will measure tissue stiffness and blood flow and will analyze the mobility of the shoulder joint using a Vicon motion capture system.

Development and Evaluation of a Smart Technology-Assisted System for Shoulder Joint Physical Therapy Assessment

Shoulder pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions. Evidence-based medicine has identified physical therapy as the most effective intervention for managing shoulder disorders. To ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning, a comprehensive evaluation that integrates various clinical findings is essential. Without timely and accurate diagnosis and intervention, shoulder pain may recur and fail to improve, limiting therapeutic outcomes. With technological advancements, the application of mobile devices and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical settings has become increasingly widespread. Motion capture technologies integrated into mobile platforms offer emerging solutions for clinical challenges. If clinicians are equipped with an intelligent system for shoulder assessment and intervention-one that includes image-based quantitative assessment tools, evidence-based clinical guidelines and data repositories, and home-based rehabilitation support-it may enhance diagnostic precision, increase clinical efficiency, and improve patient adherence to home exercise programs. The aim of this study is to develop a smart technology-assisted assessment system for orthopedic physical therapy of the shoulder joint and to validate its reliability and validity. This system will provide clinicians with objective, data-driven evaluation results. In future development, it will also offer support in treatment goal setting, intervention planning, and home-based exercise guidance. The proposed intelligent system is expected to serve as an evidence-based clinical aid, enhancing both the precision and efficiency of physical therapy interventions.

Effect of Graded Motor Imagery in Impingement

Purpose: This randomized controlled trial aims to investigate the effects of Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) added to conventional physiotherapy in patients with Grade-2 shoulder impingement syndrome. The primary objectives are to evaluate the impact of GMI on pain intensity, range of motion, kinesiophobia, joint position sense, and quality of life. The hypotheses tested are: H0: GMI combined with conventional therapy has no effect on the aforementioned outcomes. H1: GMI combined with conventional therapy significantly improves these outcomes. Methodology: The study will include 30 participants (15 control, 15 intervention) diagnosed with Grade-2 shoulder impingement, recruited from a tertiary hospital. Participants will be randomly allocated into two groups: Control Group: Receives 15 sessions of conventional physiotherapy (ultrasound, TENS, hotpack, and therapeutic exercises). Intervention Group: Receives conventional therapy plus GMI, which includes three phases: (1) lateralization training (identifying left/right limb images), (2) motor imagery (mental rehearsal of functional movements), and (3) mirror therapy (visual feedback via mirror). Outcome measures include pain (Visual Analog Scale), range of motion (digital goniometer), joint position sense (mobile app-based assessment), kinesiophobia (Tampa Scale), upper extremity function (DASH questionnaire), and quality of life (SF-36). Pre- and post-intervention evaluations will be conducted.
