Cluster Training in Female Volleyball Players

This study compares the effects of three different resistance training methods-traditional training, standard cluster training, and undulating cluster training-on strength, hormonal responses, and inflammation in female volleyball players aged 18-30 years. Thirty participants with at least two years of volleyball and resistance training experience were randomly assigned to one of three groups. All participants performed resistance training three times per week and volleyball-specific training two times per week for eight weeks. Blood samples were taken before and after the first session (acute response) and after eight weeks (chronic adaptation) to measure testosterone, cortisol, IGF-1, progesterone, and C-reactive protein (CRP). Performance tests included upper-body and lower-body strength (bench press and squat), speed, agility, and vertical jump. The main finding was that undulating cluster training produced significantly greater improvements in upper-body strength compared to standard cluster training, while all three methods were equally effective for lower-body strength and other performance measures. No significant differences were found between groups for hormonal or inflammatory changes. The study provides practical guidance for coaches seeking to optimize upper-body strength gains in female volleyball players.

Diaphragmatic Facilitation and Upper Extremity Performance in Volleyball Players

The diaphragm contributes to both respiration and trunk stabilization. Effective diaphragmatic function may support postural control, force transfer, and upper extremity performance during dynamic activities. However, evidence regarding the immediate effects of manual diaphragmatic facilitation on upper extremity performance in athletes remains limited. This study aims to investigate the immediate effects of manual diaphragmatic facilitation on upper extremity performance and respiratory function in actively participating volleyball players. Participants will receive an approximately 15-minute session of manual diaphragmatic facilitation. Pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and upper extremity strength, stability, and endurance will be assessed immediately before and after the intervention. Assessments will include spirometry, maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, the Medicine Ball Throw Test, the Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test, and the Scapular Endurance Test.

Focusing the Shoulder or Considering the Whole-Body in Volleyball Physiotherapy

Shoulder pain can be common in overhead sports, and in particular, in volleyball. Different physiotherapy protocols can be adopted depending on the suspected pathophysiological mechanisms. Despite most of the protocols rely only on the shoulder district, some research suggests that treating the whole-body might produce better results as it could influence kinematic chains and correct muscle imbalances. The aim of this study will be to compare the effects of two physiotherapy protocols (shoulder focus or whole body) compared to only education without physiotherapy.

Post-Activation Performance Enhancement in Single and Multi-Joint Exercises With BFR and EMS in Male Volleyball Players

Investigators used a randomized controlled crossover design to compare the effect of blood flow restriction (BFR) and electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) protocols on post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) in multi-joint versus single-joint exercises. Participants took part in six test sessions 72 hours apart. In the BFR group, 50% of the arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) was used. In the EMS group, a 75 Hz current was applied. In the Low Resistance exercise group, only exercise was performed without any condition. Bench press (multi-joint) and triceps push-down (single-joint) exercises were used in the conditions.
