The Rhabdomyolysis Evaluation in the Emergency Department (REED) Score

One in three adults over 65 fall annually, with one in five remaining on the floor for greater than one hour, which is referred to as a long lie. Pressure on the National Health Service has resulted in extended stays in the Emergency Department (ED) (sometimes longer than 12 hours) and prolonged ambulance response times. This impacts the older adults who have fallen and remain on the floor. This project aims to develop a risk prediction model (RPM) for use within the ED to understand which older adults (60 years or older) who fall over and remain on the floor for longer than one hour ("long lie") and develop rhabdomyolysis (a serious condition where muscle breaks down and releases substances into the blood that can damage the kidneys) will develop poor outcomes and need admission to hospital for treatment and which patients can be safely discharged home. Aim: To develop a RPM to identify which older adults who have a fall and a long lie and attend the ED develop poor outcomes such as Acute kidney Injury (AKI) \[kidneys suddenly stop working properly\], needing kidney replacement therapy (KRT) \[a treatment that helps kidneys that aren't working properly do their job of cleaning the blood\] and mortality \[death\]. Objectives: 1. Abstract patient level data (e.g. biochemical, demographic, situational, medical history, medication history) from medical records combined with outcomes to understand which variables lead to poor outcomes such as AKI, needing KRT and mortality. 2. Analyse the data using a statistical package (Statistical Package for Social Sciences \[SPSS\]) to develop a RPM with good discriminative abilities \[how well the score can tell high-risk from low-risk patients\]. 3. Demonstrate the ability of the RPM to identify which patients need admission to hospital with treatment and which patients can be safely discharged home.

Pediatric Rhabdomyolysis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Cohort Study

This retrospective observational cohort study aims to evaluate the clinical characteristics, causes, intensive care management, and outcomes of pediatric patients with rhabdomyolysis admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hannover Medical School between 2007 and 2020. The study uses routinely collected clinical data from medical records without any study-related intervention or additional patient contact. The primary objective is to identify factors associated with acute kidney injury, mortality, organ failure, and intensive care resource utilization. In addition, the study aims to develop a prognostic score to support early risk stratification of critically ill children with rhabdomyolysis. The findings may improve the understanding of this rare condition and support future clinical decision-making.

Inflammation Indıces and Mortality in Adult Crush Syndrome

This single-center, retrospective observational cohort study evaluated the prognostic value of complete blood count-derived inflammatory indices - the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), and pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) - for the prediction of 28-day mortality in adult patients with crush syndrome admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Consecutive patients aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with crush syndrome and admitted to the ICU between January 1, 2018, and September 30, 2025, were included. All indices were calculated from the complete blood count obtained within the first 24 hours of ICU admission. The primary and only outcome was 28-day mortality. The discrimination and independent prognostic value of the inflammatory indices were compared with the APACHE II and SOFA scores, and their incremental value beyond these established severity scores was assessed.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Using Virtual Reality Glasses in Prehospital Intervention Training for Crush Syndrome

This research is a randomized controlled study designed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a video-based virtual reality (VR) simulation for prehospital intervention training of crush syndrome for paramedic students. The study aims to examine the impact of VR simulation on knowledge levels, satisfaction, and sense of presence among second-year first and emergency aid students at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University.

Dexamethasone Use in Pediatric Rhabdomyolysis Patients in Addition to Standard Protocols

There is a significant unmet need for optimized treatment in rhabdomyolysis. There are few prospective interventional studies on treatment for rhabdomyolysis, a condition which affects diverse and underrepresented populations at a higher rate. While steroids are often used off-label, a systematic study has not yet been initiated, and steroids have not been yet considered in as a consideration to standard care guidelines. The hypothesis is that patients who receive dexamethasone in addition to standard care versus placebo and standard care will have improvement in pain, length of hospital stay, and decrease in kidney complications.
