Targeting Aging With a Ketone Ester for Function in Frailty

This study aims to find out if a food supplement that contains a naturally occurring substance, ketones, can help to improve strength and general wellness in adults at, or over the age of 65 years who are experiencing a slight decline in their physical function. Participation will involve a screening visit and 4 additional study visits over the course of 20 weeks. After being assessed for eligibility, study participants will be sorted into two groups at random and consume either a ketone or placebo supplement at home every day for 20 weeks. Both study products can cause gastro-intestinal side effects in some individuals. At all study visits, subjects will provide blood samples. At three study visits, subjects will be asked to complete physical performance tests, provide blood, stool and urine samples. They will also complete questionnaires during three study visits to assess physical function, markers of inflammation, and other aspects of general well-being. The study enrolls at three sites across the United States, in California (Buck Institute), Ohio (Ohio State University), and Connecticut (University of Connecticut). The study is coordinated by the San Francisco Coordinating Center (California Pacific Medical Center).

The Impact of a 48-hour Fast with or Without Exercise on Immune Cell Metabolism and Glycemic Control in Healthy Active Adults

Many individuals engage in fasting for its purported health benefits but the effects of fasting on immune cell and whole body metabolism are not well understood in humans. Moreover, how exercising during a prolonged fast impacts immunometabolic outcomes is unclear. This study will determine how a 2 day fast - performed with or without daily exercise - impacts immune cell bioenergetics, immune cell function, and whole-body glycemic control in healthy active individuals.

Investigating the Role of Energy Balance Modification on Health Responses in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia

This randomised control clinical trial aims to investigate the effects of exercise training and diet on physical and functional fitness and immunological and metabolic changes in adults with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Investigators will randomise participants to either 12 weeks of supervised/semi-supervised exercise only, exercise + nutritional guidance, or no exercise.

PCOS Immune Function Predicts Metformin Efficacy

In this study, the investigators will include PCOS patients who meet the trial criteria, introduce participants to the content of this study, and invite participants to participate. The immune function of peripheral blood samples of PCOS patients was detected by flow cytometry. Participants were further treated with metformin for 6 months and followed up after the intervention. The objective of this study was to investigate immune markers related to the efficacy of metformin in PCOS patients and to predict the efficacy of metformin in PCOS patients using immune function.

Almost 3 billion people worldwide, including 89% people in Bangladesh, are exposed to harmful household air pollutants (HAP) emitted from combustion of biomass (wood, agricultural residue, cow dung, etc.) fuel use for cooking. While health risks associated with air-pollution have been reasonably well-studied in developed countries, there is little evidence on health benefits achievable by HAP reduction through clean fuel use, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Earlier the investigators showed that Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) for 24 months, reduced personal PM2.5 exposure by 58.17 percent which induced novel changes in immune and inflammatory responses in the participants; however cardiopulmonary markers remained relatively stable in post-intervention assessment. In this study, the investigators aim to evaluate the effects of mobile phone based (mHealth) Behavioural Change Communication (BCC) intervention on adoption and exclusive use of LPG. The investigators also aimed to observe whether long-term effects of HAP reduction can impact the subclinical measures of cardio-vascular and pulmonary dysfunction and regulate innate and inflammatory immune function among women and children in semi-rural settings in Bangladesh. The investigators will also investigate the influence of exposure to HAP on antibody response to vaccines (adaptive immunity). The BCC intervention will be provided by conducting a large household level randomized controlled trial by educational intervention using mHealth based technology. In addition, the investigators will continue following the cohort and will conduct rigorous and repeated personalized (24 hours) and area (over 5 days) assessments of PM2.5 and black carbon (BC) exposure to examine the long-term effects of HAP reduction on subclinical measures of cardio-pulmonary and immune dysfunction including effect of HAP exposure on antibody response to vaccine.
